Fastag must not be mandatory for all vehicles

December 16, 2019

Sir,

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made it mandatory that all four-wheel vehicles should carry Fastag, which they say, will help faster clearance of vehicles through the Toll Gates. I think that making it compulsory is absurd.

I own a car but I seldom drive out on the Highways. So why should I invest in a Fastag and also pay double the toll for not having one? I am sure there are lakhs of owners similar to me. It’s not a case of just Rs.500 but the collection, country-wise will be in several crores!

The authorities could make it compulsory for all buses and lorries, taxis and the like, but leave it optional for privately owned cars. I am surprised that no one is objecting to the imposition of this unnecessary expenses. The authorities would do well to rethink on this issue.
