Vehicle owners allege harassment by Police while checking documents

Mysore/Mysuru: Several vehicle owners in the city have complained that as the information of Fitness Certificate (FC) expiry date of some of their vehicles is missing in the RTO website, they are being harassed by the Police Department while checking their vehicles.

Policemen resort to checking vehicle documents at all major roads, junctions and circles. While checking the documents, the vehicle owners are supposed to produce physical documents of their vehicle and also the Registration Certificate (RC). But the RC is cross-checked by the Police on the RTO website.

Usually, the details of the vehicle, name of the owner, registration and the FC information is entered in the RC. By checking the website, the Police want to ensure the genuineness of the vehicle and also match it with the RTO website. But sometimes due to non-upload of the data and due to technical glitches, some vehicle data is not available on the website and this is causing problems.

Vehicle owners have alleged that despite having valid documents and in spite of the FC being well within the expiry date, they are being harassed by the Police during the vehicle document checking drive.

“Police do not trust what is printed on the RC book or card. Even if the RC card is produced, they fully rely on the information available in the RTO website and if the information is missing from the website, vehicle owners are being harassed,” a vehicle owner alleged adding that he had a similar experience with the Insurance agency too which refused to renew the policy.

However, Transport Department officers clarified that there might be some technical glitches for the information to be missing on the RTO website. “That too only in rare cases the FC details of certain vehicles will be missing. But the M-Parivahan website will have all the details of all the vehicles and the confusion would be sorted out,” the officials added.
