Srirangapatna: A fight over a petty issue has led to lovers jumping into a water pond in a bid to commit suicide resulting in the 26-year-old youth getting drowned and his lover being saved by the public at Palahalli yesterday.

The deceased youth is Arjun. Arjun and the 19-year-old girl were from Palahalli.

Arjun, a lift operator at Jayadeva Hospital in Mysuru, belonged to the same village and were in love since many years. Though there was no opposition from the families of both of them, Arjun and the girl had fought for petty reasons and had reportedly decided to commit suicide.

The duo on Sunday, reached the water body on Halekiranguru-Kengarakoppal Road and jumped into the water body. 

A few agricultural labourers, who were working in the fields nearby, saw Arjun and the girl jumping into the water body and rushed to the spot and tried to save them. But Arjun had already died and they managed to save the girl from drowning and admitted her to a local hospital.

A complaint has been lodged at Srirangapatna Town Police Station in this regard.
