Former FKCCI Chief urges DC not to name City Circles after Corporators

October 24, 2020

Mysore/Mysuru: Strongly opposing the MCC’s (Mysuru City Corporation) decision to name some Circles of the city after late Corporators and other dignitaries, former FKCCI (Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Chairman Sudhakar S. Shetty has urged the authorities to drop such moves.

In a letter written to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rohini Sindhuri, Sudhakar Shetty said that thousands of tourists will visit the city every year and Mysuru will be left to search for more Circles if the trend of naming Circles after Corporators continue.

Maintaining that the naming of Circles is a move aimed at pleasing the Corporators, he said that it will be appropriate to name Circles only after Freedom Fighters or other great national leaders as it will help the tourists to get to know of the achievements of such great personalities of the State.

Noting that barring that of Kittur Rani Chennamma and Onake Obavva, a Circle after Rani Abbakka Devi seems to be found nowhere, he said that the names of other great personalities such as Karnad Sadashiva Rao, Dr. M.S. Hardikar, Gopalkrishna Gokhale, S. Nijalingappa, Nittur Srinivas Rao, Alur Venkatrao, Tekur Subramanyam, Sangolli Rayanna, Umabai Kundapur, Yashodhara Dasappa and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay can be considered for naming Circles.

Pointing out that Karnataka has eight Jnanpith awardees — Kuvempu, Da.Ra. Bendre, Shivaram Karanth, Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, V.K. Gokak, U.R. Ananthamurthy, Girish Karnad and Chandrashekar Kambar — Sudhakar Shetty said that the Circles can also be named after these Jnanpith awardees.

Stating that the names of Roads and Circles that have been named with a political intent needs to be changed, Shetty said in his letter that it will be apt to name Roads and Circles after renowned freedom fighters and warriors, Dadasaheb Phalke awardees and Jnanpith awardees.

Commenting on Swachh Bharat Mission, Shetty said that the MCC should practice ‘Clean City’ Mantra for the development of Mysuru.

Pointing out that the city generates 500 tonnes of waste every day and only 200 tonnes out of it is disposed, he said that it is vital to find a means for scientific disposal of the remaining 300 tonnes of waste.

Stating that the city is adding 100 tonnes of construction debris every day, he said that a long-lasting solution should be founded for this problem too.

Mysuru Kannada Vedike too opposes naming of Circles after Corporators

Meanwhile, Mysuru Kannada Vedike too has opposed naming of Circles in the city after Corporators.

In a memorandum submitted to the DC on Friday, the Vedike members said that the MCC has passed a controversial resolution on naming a few Circles after late Corporators and other politicians.

The MCC, at its recent Council Meeting, passed the resolution despite stiff opposition from MP Pratap Simha, who wanted to name the Circles after great personalities, they said.

Recalling the contributions of  the erstwhile Mysore Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, they said that the Circles could be named after Pratapkumari Devi, wife of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sathyapremakumari, wife of Nalwadi Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, as the two had earned great respect from the people of the State.

Historian Prof. P.V. Nanjaraj Urs, Mysuru Kannada Vedike President S. Balakrishna, office-bearers Naalabeedi Ravi, Palace Babu Aravind, Ravi Nayak, Babu and others were present.
