Mysuru: Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha is organising a Hindustani classical vocal concert by Vidu. Poorvi Garud at Sangeeta Kalanidhi Mysore K. Vasudevacharya Bhavana on JLB Road in city tomorrow (July 26) at 6 pm.
She will be accompanied by Pt. Veerabhadraiah Hiremath on harmonium and Pt. Gurucharan Garud on tabla.
Profile: Vidu. Poorvi Garud hails from a family of musicians. She is the great granddaughter Garuda Sadashiva Rao, a visionary Kannada playwright, actor and theatre personality and granddaughter of late Pt. D.S. Garud, a senior tabla artiste and Hindustani Classical musician of Karnataka. Her father, Pt. Gurucharan Garud, is a tabla artiste.
She began learning music at the age of 4 from her mother Vidu.Shubha Garud and later from Vidu. Vedavathi Gopalaswamy and Pt. Keerthikumar Badasheshi. Since 2006, she was under the tutelage of Surmani Pt. Dr. Dattatreya L. Velankar, a well-known Hindustani classical vocalist for 16 years.
An Engineering graduate in E&C with distinction dedicated herself completely to music, Poorvi has been awarded National-level Young Musician Scholarship by National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, for 2023-25 and has secured first place in the State-level ‘Pratibha Karanji’ competitions in 2014. She has performed at various prominent places in India, Indonesia etc.
She has been trained in Kirana-Gwalior tradition, known for melodious Raga Vistar and exploration of gripping Layakari (rhythmic) possibilities.
