II PU exams from March 9 to 27:Testing time for students, parents, Minister and PU Board

March 7, 2017

In the wake of a series of question paper leaks during the Second PUC examinations conducted last year, the Department of Pre-University Board is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that this year’s examinations will pass off question-paper-leak-free and at the same  time glitch-free.

While it is an annual testing time for lakhs of students and their parents, it is also testing time for the Department and the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait. Last year, the Department and the State Government had to face severe embarrassment due to question paper leaks and the situation was complicated by the unpreparedness of the officials and the Ministry to  handle the crisis.

This year, it will also be a challenge for the Government to simultaneously ensure the smooth conduct of the examinations and to ensure that the answer scripts are evaluated, in the wake of PU lecturers threatening to boycott evaluation demanding pay parity and  other demands.

This year, 6,84,240 students will appear for the examinations from streams including arts, science and commerce and of them, 3,48,438 are boys and 3,35,802 are girls. In all, 5,48,903 are fresh candidates, 1,05,092 are repeaters and 30,252 are private candidates.

In Mysuru, 36,891 students will take up the examinations that will be held at 26 centres in Mysuru, 3 in H.D. Kote, 4 in Hunsur, 3 centres in K.R. Nagar, 4 in Nanjangud, 4 in   Periyapatna, and 6 centres in T. Narsipur. In all, there are 50 centres in the district.

To prevent malpractices, officers including Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Treasury Officer, 10 Tahsildars, 10 Deputy Tahsildars, 10 Block Education Officers, and 10 Principals have been brought under bio-metric system and have been given code numbers.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, PU Board Director C. Shikha said that the Department was fully geared up for the smooth conduct of the examinations. “For the first time, CCTV cameras have been installed at all exam centres and gunmen have been provided to transport question papers. We have written to DG&IGP Rupak Kumar Dutta requesting him to direct SPs in all districts to ensure security in and around II PUC exam centres. We have also sought Police protection for places where confidential material will be stored,” she said.

On their part, the Police have imposed ban orders under Section 144, 200 metres around the exam centres. Also, security has been provided at all places where the question papers  are stored.

“We will be extra-cautious and will take adequate steps to ensure smooth conduct of exams and students and parents should not get influenced by messages on various social media platforms. Students must concentrate on studies,” said Jayaprakash, Deputy Director of PU Education, Mysuru.
