July 9, 2019

H.D. Kote: A 40-year-old elephant was electrocuted when it accidentally came in contact with an electrified fence near Anemala village in the taluk on Sunday night.

Villager Subramanya had illegally electrified the fence around his land where he grew banana. The elephant, from Nagarahole National Park probably searching for food could have come in contact with the fence and instantly electrocuted.

On receiving information, a team of forest officials from Balle Range visited the spot and confirmed that the elephant was electrocuted. Senior officials too inspected the spot and gathered all the information. Land owner Subramanya is absconding and the Forest Department has registered a case under the provisions of Wildlife Act.

Veterinarian Dr. Mujeeb conducted the post-mortem of the elephant which was later buried at the same place. Nagarahole Project Tiger Director Narayana Swamy and other forest officials visited the spot.
