Install traffic signal light at B.M. Hospital Junction

April 27, 2019

Sir,

This has reference to the news item, “Defunct traffic signal lights repair works begin in city” (SOM dated Apr.24). I have a few observations in this regard. The unfortunate situation is many traffic lights are present only in principle and very often refuse to work.  What with our youth showing scant regard to traffic rule, even when the lights operate; you can imagine the mayhem when the lights don’t work.

Another interesting point is the absence of the Traffic Policeman when lights don’t operate, particularly at night times, but mysteriously appearing when they work. Most times you have to seriously search for the uniformed officer (if present) who will be away from the actual scene, talking to a friend or chatting on his mobile and absolutely apathetic about the duty assigned.

There is perhaps no surprise check by a superior official to correct the erring man on duty. Signal jumping, overtaking from the wrong side, three or some times even four people (!) on a two-wheeler is on the rise. Messaging (forget about talking on mobile, everybody does it),  road rage and such other antics go on unchecked.

We still do not understand why and how the lights can be switched off  before  9 pm when the streets will have full stream. We all know about the shortage of manpower etc., but again why should a tax- payer’s life be put to risk because of failure in administrative process.

Now, there is an urgent need to install traffic lights at the Hunsur Road junction near  B.M. Hospital. Any delay may result in loss of life or limb as the traffic is very heavy. Also many educational institutions and offices are in the vicinity and it is a Highway, with public transportation in full swing always.

On behalf of thousands of motorists, I appeal to the Officers of the Department to educate the road users very strictly, either through persuasion or through penalty so high that he or she will think not twice but many times before disobeying public laws.
