JSS Hospital successfully performs Living Donor Liver Transplantation

January 27, 2022

Mysore/Mysuru: JSS Medical College and Hospital has achieved a milestone by performing living donor liver transplantation in a 22-year-old adult, who was suffering from cirrhosis of liver. This was disclosed by Dr. (Col.) M. Dayananda, Director, JSS Hospitals, at a press meet in city on Tuesday.

There are two types of liver transplantation — LDLT and DDLT.  Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) is a type of liver transplantation wherein a part of the liver is taken from a healthy donor and transplanted into an individual with end stage liver disease. In DDLT, liver is taken from a brain-dead person and is then transplanted into a patient who requires liver transplantation.

The world’s first liver transplantation was done in 1963 by Dr. T.E. Starzl. The first successful DDLT and LDLT in India was performed in 1998. Every year around 50,000 to 60,000 patients require liver transplant in India. However, due to lack of awareness about the available facilities, donor availability, less cadaveric (brain dead) organ donation in our country only about 2,000 patients undergo transplants annually.

At JSS Hospital in Mysuru, the 22-year-old patient was diagnosed as chronic liver disease with decompensation (jaundice and ascites – fluid in the abdomen) and underwent LDLT. Patient’s mother (38 years) who is a healthy adult came forward to donate a part of her liver.

Multi-disciplinary team of JSS Hospital and organ transplantation team from BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru, successfully performed LDLT on Dec. 17, 2021. The team was led by Dr. H.P. Nandeesh, Professor & Head, Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Gi surgery team by Dr. Mahesh Shetty, Hepato-biliary team of BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital by Dr. Mahesh Gopasetty, Dr. Sunil Shenvi, Dr. Ashish Shetty and Dr. Arun.
