Chamarajanagar: A farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Tiganare village near Talawadi in Tamil Nadu. The deceased farmer is Mahadeva (50) of Tiganare.

Mahadeva, who had grown sugarcane, had gone to his field in the night to protect the crops from wild animals during which a wild elephant entered the field. Mahadeva, in a bid to protect his sugarcane crops, tried to chase the wild elephant away but the elephant attacked him & trampled him to death, villagers said.

Villagers complained that wild animals have been destroying standing crops since about six months. Pointing out that it has become very difficult to protect their crops from wild animals, they alleged that the Forest Department was not taking any steps to prevent wild animals from destroying their crops.
