Jumping road dividers: A risky affair

February 27, 2020

Sir,

Jumping the road dividers (either the metal grills in the past or the present cement blocks) by people of all age groups (young and even by senior citizens) can be seen very commonly on all four roads at the city centre, which have high density of vehicular movement.

Though provision was made at many places in the divider on Sayyaji Rao road to enable people to cross, one can see people crossing the divider by jumping over it. It looks that such people do not have time and patience to walk up to the gaps in the median or the zebra crossing located at K.R. Circle and are trying to cross the busy road, wherever they feel. Thus they are risking their life and posing danger to the vehicle-users.

To avoid this, a metal grill like structure over the cement blocks, similar to the one used by Bengaluru City Corporation very recently to prevent agitators crossing the road (see photo), may be installed. However, these iron grills can be made with wheels, so that it can be moved aside towards footpath during the Dasara period. The authorities concerned may look into this suggestion and install similar structures on city roads, at least near K.R. Circle.
