Mysuru: Dasara Kambala Sub-Committee Chairman and ZP CEO S. Ukesh Kumar formally received the ‘Kambalada Betha’ (Kambala cane) from State Kambala Committee member Muralidhar Rai Matanthabettu at his office yesterday, signalling the final phase of preparations for the Dasara Kambala to be held on Oct. 18 and 19 at Sathagalli.

The Kambala stick is traditionally used by the jockey to guide and control the buffaloes as they race through the slushy tracks. Artisans select slender canes and treat and bend them using controlled heat to make them flexible and durable. The canes are also decorated.

The use of the cane has faced criticism from animal welfare groups over injuries caused to buffaloes, including cuts, welts and abrasions.

In response to concerns and legal requirements, the Kambala State Committee modified the traditional cane. The modern version has a softened striking end, using materials such as foam and sponge, locally known as ‘Gonde,’ to reduce the impact. It is intended primarily for guiding and signalling the buffaloes instead of causing pain.
