Labourer from Assam kills wife, daughter in Kodagu

Flees after dumping bodies into school well

Virajpet: A labourer, working at a coffee estate at Kolatodu Bygodu village near Virajpet in Kodagu, has allegedly killed his wife and daughter and has fled from the place after dumping the bodies into a well at a school nearby.

The accused, claiming to be from Assam had come to the estate of one, Mukkatira Devaiah at Kolatodu village along with his wife and daughter seeking a job about two weeks ago. Devaiah, who employed him, also gave the family a place to stay at the labourers’ quarters. The accused had identified himself as Ali.

On last Monday, Ali came to Devaiah and told him that his wife and daughter had gone to the market. He then asked Devaiah to give him Rs. 13,000 which Ali wanted urgently to send to his native village in Assam. Following Ali’s request, Devaiah gave him the money and Ali left the place and later, neither Ali nor his wife and daughter returned.

Yesterday morning, foul smell began to emanate from a well at the village school premises. When teachers and local residents looked inside the well, they found two bodies floating and immediately informed the Virajpet Rural Police.

When the Police reached the spot, Devaiah, who was also present there, identified the bodies as that of Ali’s 40-year-old wife and 15-year-old daughter.

Police have suspected that  Ali may have killed his daughter by hitting her on the head with a lethal weapon and strangling his wife with a nylon rope.

Virajpet Rural Police, who have registered a case against Ali,  are investigating.
