Pushes her into Varuna Canal; Srirangapatna Police arrest him at a bakery in Hassan
Srirangapatna: A man allegedly murdered his wife by pushing her into a canal after she questioned his second marriage. The crime came to light when the woman’s body was discovered in a fishing net in the Varuna Canal near Madarahalli in the taluk, about five days ago.
The victim, identified as A.P. Pramila (39), a resident of Krishnanagar in Hassan, had been married to the accused, Y.N. Kiran (a native of Yadavanahalli in Alur taluk, Hassan).
Details of the case
On Nov. 18, fishermen, casting their nets in the Varuna Canal near Madarahalli, were shocked to find a woman’s body caught in the net.
They immediately alerted the Police, who arrived at the scene, conducted a mahazar, and initially registered the case as an unnatural death. As no one came forward to claim the body, the Police performed the last rites.
Pramila’s husband had died five years earlier, leaving her to raise two children. Kiran, a contract employee of the RBI in Mysuru, had been living nearby when he developed a relationship with Pramila.
Financial dealings
He rented a house at Lakshmikantha Nagar in Mysuru, where he brought Pramila to live and arranged for her to get a job at RBI on a contract basis. However, under pressure from his parents, Kiran secretly married another woman who worked at a private company.
It was revealed that Kiran and Pramila had lent significant sums of money to someone who had failed to return it. The couple also invested in a business venture — Kiran opened “Kiran Gowda’s Military Hotel” near Outer Ring Road, for which Pramila contributed Rs. 3 lakh.
The hotel, however, suffered a loss, and Pramila discovered Kiran had remarried, leading to frequent arguments between them. Tensions escalated further when Kiran’s second wife became pregnant, and Pramila confronted Kiran after he took his second wife to the hospital.
Pushed into Varuna Canal
On Nov. 17, Kiran took Pramila to Mogarahalli to buy fish for her daughter’s birthday. Afterwards, he allegedly pushed her into the Varuna Canal and fled the scene. Upon returning home, Kiran told Pramila’s children that their mother had slipped and fallen into the canal, asking them not to share this with anyone.
When Pramila’s brother called her, and she didn’t answer, he travelled to Mysuru to inquire about her. Kiran casually responded, but Pramila’s children reiterated that their mother had slipped into the canal.
Concerned, Pramila’s brother and mother went to the Hebbal Police Station and, after some inquiry, were directed to the KRS Police Station. There, they were shown photos of the body, which they confirmed as Pramila’s. They also expressed their suspicions about Kiran’s involvement.
Foulplay suspected
The Police, now suspecting foulplay, initiated an investigation. Kiran was arrested near a bakery in Hassan and during interrogation, the truth about the murder emerged. The case was shifted from an unnatural death to a murder investigation and Kiran was remanded to judicial custody.
Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjuna Baladandi and Srirangapatna Dy.SP Murali, along with the local Police team, led by Srirangapatna Circle Inspector Puneeth and KRS Sub-Inspectors Ramesh Karki Katte and Ramanna, played a key role in the arrest.
