March 27, 2019

Mysuru:  Workers being made to get down into a manhole and clean it has taken place on Ambedkar Road at Ashokapuram here yesterday. The incident took place during the ongoing manhole works at MCC Ward No.56 limits.

When the matter was brought to the notice of Corporator Begum Pallavi, she said that the incident has taken place without her notice and added that some people had sent her photos of workers inside the manhole. She further stated that she was near the DC’s office when she received the photos and rushed to the spot and added that the workers had left the place by the time she arrived at the spot.

Stating that the workers who had entered into the manhole were not Pourakarmikas, she said that manhole works were going on in the area and the workers were brought by Contractor Ajay.

Meanwhile, MCC Commissioner Shilpa Nag said that the incident had come to her notice and she has already issued a notice to the concerned Engineer seeking information.

She further said that manhole works were going on in the locality and the persons who had got into the manhole were not Pourakarmikas besides stating that strict action would be taken if they were Pourakarmikas.

N. Puneeth, a resident, said that making Pourakarmikas to indulge in manual scavenging is a murder of humanity. It looks like the society has forgotten that Pourakarmikas are also the members of the society, he said and added that the Government should take this issue seriously and take action against the guilty.
