Migratory bird census from Jan. 12 to 14

December 27, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: The annual migration of birds to Mysuru in winter has been delayed this time and birds are still coming even after the general migration period ends in December and January. These birds roost in the water bodies in and around Mysuru and they stay here till the summer sets in.

Describing this year’s migration pattern, Rajkumar D. Urs of Wildlife Conservation Foundation told Star of Mysore that due to climate change, three cyclones have hit the southern peninsula in the last two months and there has been continuous rains.

“This year’s migration is distributed and migratory birds have not chosen just one or two lakes in Mysuru like every year. This year, there are at all Lakes and this is the reason why a migratory bird census has been organised by e-bird from Jan. 12 to 14. Usually, migration season starts in November and ends in December or January but this year, birds are still coming,” he said.

Also, many migratory birds prefer stagnant and marshy lakes in Mysuru instead of Lakes that are full to the brim. This is due to easy availability of food, mainly insects that lay eggs that form larvae on the vegetation on marshy land with shrub growth.
