MLC polls: All 11 candidates likely to be elected unopposed

Bengaluru: All the eleven candidates from the Congress, the BJP and the JD(S), who filed their nomination papers for the biennial election to the Legislative Council from the Legislative Assembly on Thursday are likely to be elected unopposed, with only those candidates who were officially announced by the parties, filing nominations. As Thursday was the last day for filing nomination, all of them are set to be elected unopposed.

The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place today, following which an official announcement is likely to be made. The BJP renominated Raghunath Rao Malikpure and fielded former MP and party spokesperson Tejaswini Gowda, Rudre Gowda from Shivamogga, who made way for senior BJP leader K.S. Eshwarappa in the Assembly polls, K.P. Nanjundi, a prominent leader of Vishwakarma community and N. Ravi Kumar, party General Secretary.

The Congress renominated C.M. Ibrahim and K. Govindaraj and fielded Arvind Kumar Arali of Bidar and K. Harish Kumar of Dakshina Kannada. Though the BJP and Congress announced their list of candidates on Wednesday, the JD(S) in a last minute decision on Thursday, decided to field party General Secretary B.M. Farookh and former Legislator S.L. Dharmegowda from Chikkamagalur district. The elections were necessitated as the term of 11 members will end on June 17.
