The University of Mysore has conferred Honorary Doctorate upon veteran politician and senior BJP leader S.M. Krishna. His long-standing association with the University dates back to his student days, characterised by academic excellence. Having graduated from Maharaja’s College in Mysuru with a Bachelor’s degree and subsequently obtaining a law degree from the Government Law College in Bengaluru, Krishna furthered his education at Southern Methodist University in the United States, where he distinguished himself as a Fulbright scholar.

Embarking on his political journey as an MLA from Maddur, Krishna went on to hold positions such as MLA, MP, Deputy Chief Minister and CM of Karnataka, Governor of Maharashtra and Minister of External Affairs. Notably, during his tenure as the CM, Bengaluru witnessed significant progress, particularly in the realm of Information Technology.

Krishna played a pivotal role in reshaping the landscapes of both Bengaluru and Mysuru. Star of Mysore had the opportunity to speak with the 91-year-old Krishna, a recipient of the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ award, where he graciously shared his thoughts.  Excerpts:

Star of Mysore (SOM): How do you feel about receiving the Honorary Doctorate from the prestigious and century-old University of Mysore?

S.M. Krishna: I am deeply honoured by the recognition extended to me by the institution where I pursued my education, Maharaja’s College, a constituent of Mysore University. Being acknowledged by the University from which I graduated fills me with immense pride.

My college days in Mysuru hold a special place in my heart. It was a time of profound growth and learning, shaping me into the person I am today. Reflecting on those years brings me great joy. However, I can’t help but wonder if we could have made even better use of our time.

SOM: What are your thoughts on the controversies surrounding the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) and the State Education Policy?

S.M. Krishna: Progress in the field of education can only occur when there is stability and consensus. I believe that unnecessary turmoil does not serve any constructive purpose.

SOM: There has been recent controversy regarding ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans in Vidhana Soudha and ‘Pakistan is a friend’ statement. What is your take on these political allegations and                         counter-allegations?

S.M. Krishna: I have distanced myself from politics, so I am not closely involved in these matters. However, it’s evident that shouting slogans like ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in the Assembly is unacceptable to anyone. This is a topic of ongoing debate, and we will have to wait and see how it unfolds.

SOM: How do you respond to the bomb blast at the renowned Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru?

S.M. Krishna: The incident is deeply unsettling. Investigation agencies are actively probing the incident, seeking to uncover the motives and perpetrators behind the blast. It’s crucial to await the findings of the investigation before drawing conclusions.

SOM: In recent times, some politicians have been engaging in uncivil discourse without restraint. What advice would you offer to such individuals?

S.M. Krishna: Politics has always had its unique dynamics. However, elected representatives should approach their roles with seriousness and accountability. While expressing their viewpoints, they must adhere to the principles of civility and refrain from crossing ethical boundaries. This is a fundamental norm upheld universally.

SOM: What are your views on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections?

S.M. Krishna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demonstrated remarkable leadership for the nation, devoid of any caste-based favouritism. He stands as an exceptional Prime Minister in India’s history. It’s imperative to empower him further and unite to bolster India’s strength. I firmly believe that Modi will secure a significant victory in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, owing to the people’s unwavering support.

SOM: Many leaders in prominent positions nowadays refer to dignitaries such as Presidents, Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers without the due respect, addressing them in singular form, and often mocking them with disdain. What is your stance on this cultural shift?

S.M. Krishna: Irrespective of their positions, everyone should communicate with seriousness and accountability. There exists a decorum in governance and politics that ought to be observed. Mutual respect is essential, even when addressing adversaries. This holds particular significance in today’s context.

SOM: What guidance would you offer to youth venturing into politics?

S.M. Krishna: There’s a pressing need for youth participation in politics. They should actively involve themselves and take initiative in shaping the nation’s trajectory and future. By engaging responsibly in politics, they can contribute significantly towards building a better tomorrow for our country.
