Sir,
Dr. Javeed Nayeem, in his article titled ‘A mother first and everything else, only later!’ under his weekly column ‘Over a Cup of Evening Tea’ (Star of Mysore dated Nov. 6) says he was delighted and distressed referring to an incident when a mother, an IAS Officer of Kerala cadre cuddling her toddler son in a private film function came under sharp criticism from some quarters.
For the mother regardless of any status or situation bestowing love on the child is first priority and most natural one for motherhood. It is something divine and most adorable. It is extremely doubtful whether any man as brother, son, or husband however sensitive or intelligent despite long association and deep attachment can ever hope to divine what goes on in the mind of a woman. And when she becomes a mother it takes altogether a different dimension. Nature has blessed the woman and no man can ever experience the birth pangs when she brings out the child that was the part of her life and she smiles with supreme joy when it cries. It is perhaps the finest moment of her life and motherhood takes over then on.
There are several description of Mother and Motherhood. Probably what Khalil Gibran says may convey some measure of Mother:
‘The mother is everything — she is our consolation in sorrow, our hope in misery, and strength in weakness. She is the source of love, mercy, sympathy and forgiveness. He who loves his mother loves a pure soul who blesses and guards him constantly. Mother, the most beautiful word on the lips of mankind.’
