Hon. Doctorates to be conferred on artistes Enagi Balappa, Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy and Prof. N. Rajam

The second Annual Convocation of Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University will be held at Nityotsava Convention Hall (near Ballal Circle) tomorrow (Mar.7) at 10 am.

Addressing media persons yesterday, University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar said that the University would be presenting Honorary Doctorates to centenarian Enagi

Balappa recognising his immense contributions to theatre, Karnatak Classical vocalist Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy and Hindustani Violinist Prof. N. Rajam.

Balappa, who is 104-years-old, will not be attending the function owing to his advanced age and VC Dr. Sarvamangala would be visiting Enagi village in Savadatti Taluk, Belagavi, on Mar. 8 to present the Hon. Doctorate to Balappa in person.

Meanwhile, 86-year-old Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy is from Mysuru. She retired as Professor from University of Mysore Fine Arts College. Another stalwart Prof. N. Rajam, who is 80-years-old is the Professor Emeritus of Benaras Hindu University and resides in Mumbai.

A total of 47 students will receive their degrees during the Convocation, including 18 gold medals to 12 students, cash prizes to 3 students along with the ranks to 9 students.

Renowned violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam (in pic) will deliver the Convocation Address. Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai R. Vala will preside. Minister for Higher Education Pro-Chancellor Basavaraj Rayareddy will be present. The event will be followed by a musical concert by alumni students of the University.
