Mysore/Mysuru: To broaden its reach throughout the State, the Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University based in the city, recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 17 private institutions dedicated to the promotion of music.

Music University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nagesh V. Bettakote announced this development during a press conference held at its premises on JLB Road, Lakshmipuram in city recently.

According to Prof. Bettakote, the MoU has been formalised to facilitate the commencement of Certificate and Diploma courses in Music and Dance, starting from this academic year.

These courses will encompass a range of disciplines, including Karnatak Music, Bharatanatyam, Hindustani Music, Sugama Sangeetha, Veena, Sitar and Harmonium.

Prof. Bettakote highlighted that while the University had signed MoUs with 10 institutions, this recent agreement expanded the collaboration to 17 institutions, two of which will operate as research centres.

Emphasising that these institutions will conduct classes and exams based on University’s syllabus, he expressed optimism that this initiative would extend the academic footprint of the University beyond Mysuru to other parts of the State.

Acknowledging the approval of the MoUs by the Governor-Chancellor, Prof. Bettakote revealed the Varsity’s intention to introduce short-term courses.

He also disclosed that MUDA had allocated five acres of land at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Nadanahalli, for the new campus  of the University.

Previously, MUDA had sanctioned 8.45 acres near Sathagalli; however, this land was returned to MUDA due to high-tension power line which was passing through, posing challenges to smooth construction works.

Despite facing financial constraints and lacking a dedicated building, Prof. Bettakote asserted that the University had gained nationwide recognition as a leading institution for music and performing arts education.

He said that applications were now being accepted for three, six and one-year diploma courses through online mode, following approval from the UGC.

Additionally, plans were underway to conduct the convocation in January, he said.
