‘Mysuru Memories’ narrate academic grandeur of Mysore University

March 10, 2019

Sir,

We, Mysureans are beholden to Star of Mysore for publishing illuminating articles by Dr. S.N. Bhagirath under the column Mysuru Memories. His write-up on D.L. Narasimhachar (SOM dated Mar.5) and earlier ones on Dr. M.H. Krishna, Prof. M. Hiriyanna, Dr. R. Shamasastry, Prof. Nanjundappa and Krishnappa Venkatappa so picturesquely narrate the historic period of  academic grandeur of University of Mysore in particular, and the cultural heritage of Mysuru city in general.

Common thread one finds is that neither extreme economic poverty nor the place of birth came in the way of their pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence. Single-minded commitment to knowledge was their mission.

Would it be wrong to surmise that the first four decades of the University were its golden period of academics?  After reading these articles one wonders whether  the motto of the University  “Na hi Jnanena Sadrusham” (Nothing is equal to Knowledge) has any relevance today?

Can the University survive, let alone prosper, by living on the past glory?
