Mythological and wild characters attract crowd at Rammanahalli Jathra

Mysuru: Former Chief Minister and State JD(S) President H.D. Kumaraswamy (HDK) participated in the Marammathayi Jathramahotsava underway in Rammanahalli on the outskirts of city yesterday.

Addressing thousands of devotees on the occasion, Kumaraswamy contended that Rammanahalli was like his native place as the residents of the village had supported him at the time of difficulty.

He thanked the residents for supporting JD(S) during last election and appealed them to continue the trend and elect G.T. Devegowda (GTD).

He appreciated the people of the village in celebrating the festival dressed as mythological characters like Rama and Lakshmana and asked them to retain the same comradeship.

He assured to donate Rs.2 lakh for religious rituals. MLA GTD and others were present.

A special festival

The festival of the rural deity is celebrated every year in Rammanahalli. However, once in two years the festival assumes a special nature.

Residents of the village provide entertainment dressed in colourful special costumes to look like transgender, Police, doctor, lawyer, mythological characters like Shiva, Parvathi, Vishnu, Srirama, Seetha, Lakshmana and others.

A few even dress unusually to look like a demon or any wild character. The practice is said to be in vogue for several years. The 15-day festival concluded yesterday.
