May 20, 2019

Mysuru: Narayana Multispeciality Hospital added another feather to its illustrious streak of medical excellence by performing microwave ablation, the latest in treating varicose vein disease through minimally invasive procedure on a 62-year-old patient from city.

Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins, which prevents the blood from flowing backwards. It happens when valves in the veins do not function properly. The condition can cause severe pain and discomfort. It can also lead to painful conditions like venous eczema, skin thickening and ulceration.

Prema Ashok Kumar, a 62-year-old homemaker was leading a normal life when she started developing severe pain in her legs five months ago. Though initially she ignored it, the pain was becoming severe as days went by making it difficult for her to walk even inside her house She approached Narayana Hospital and the team under the support of Dr. Shailesh Shivraj Pene conducted a thorough evaluation and it was revealed that Prema Ashok Kumar was suffering from varicose vein disease.

The doctor advised Prema to undergo microwave ablation procedure as microwave ablation have higher chances of occlusion for varicose veins. Microwave ablation is the latest mode of treating varicose vein disease. In this treatment modality unlike radio frequency and laser ablation, microwave ablation uses dielectric hysterics to produce direct volume heating of tissue. Today, the patient is not only cured of her condition, she is able to lead a healthy life.

Elaborating on the treatment, Dr. Shailesh Shivraj Pene, Interventional Radiologist, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysuru, said, “Microwave ablation is the latest treatment modality and it has been showing favorable results with no major complications. When compared to other endovenous procedures the recurrence rate is less in this therapy with significant higher occlusion rate. Further, this

procedure does not require the patient to undergo anesthesia. The biggest advantage of microwave ablation is that it is a day care procedure i.e., patient will be discharged on the same day and the patient can resume their day to day activity from next day of the procedure.”

Expressing her joy after recovering, Prema Ashok Kumar, said, “Apart from physical stress, the pain and my inability to move around was affecting me emotionally as well. I was worried that I will have to be dependent on others until I met Dr. Shailesh Shivraj Pene and team. Dr. Shailesh Shivraj Pene and team have not only relived me of my pain, they have helped me to lead a healthy and  independent life.”
