Mysuru: As part of National Consumer Day which is celebrated on Dec. 24, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), Legal Metrology Department, Mysuru Milk Union Limited (MyMUL), Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) Limited and students of St. Philomena’s College created awareness by educating public on different aspects of consumer protection in city this morning.
MGP has set up a kiosk near Chikkagadiyara (Dufferin Clock Tower) and distributed handbills, books etc. pertaining to detection of various adulterations besides providing information about the protection of consumer rights undertaken by Departments, Agencies and Corporation. A membership drive was also held by MGP on the occasion.
MGP members, who highlighted the importance of consumer rights, informed the public that consumers have all rights to have information about the quality, potency, quantity, purity, price and standard of goods or services of all the products.
MGP Working President S. Shobhana, Secretary Sridhar Gundappagowda, Executive Committee Members Dr. Bhamy V. Shenoy, Renu Agarwal, Raghavendra, Ravi Prakash, Yamuna, Shailajesh, Vishwanath, Manu and others were present.
MyMUL, which has also set up a kiosk, demonstrated the manufacturing process of various products and also conducted sale of sweets. Legal Metrology Department, led by Inspectors Nityananda and Sumarani, conducted demonstration about how the public are cheated in weight and measurement by traders. They asked the public to check the weight and measurement of their products before leaving the shops.
CESC (N.R. Sub-Division) Executive Engineer Poornananda and other officials educated the public by urging them to file complaints utilising the helpline number 1912 in case of power disruptions and irregular power cuts in their vicinity.
The students of M.Sc Chemistry Department from St. Philomena’s College explained on how customers are cheated by traders by supplying adulterated products and sensitised them on various health effects caused by consuming adulterated food items. They also demonstrated on detection of adulterated products on the occasion.
On Dec. 23, SBI, Yadavagiri, has organised a meeting to interact with MGP Members on how to treat consumers as a king.
On Dec. 27, MGP Members will interact with top officials of MCC and DC’s office on two different events to promote the concept of ‘Citizens are masters in democracy and not to be treated as servants’ besides planning to hold interactions with educational institutions on consumer protection and responsibilities during these days.
