As part of the 40th National Eye Donation Fortnight (Aug. 25 to Sept. 8), Lions International Eye Bank (LIEB), Bangalore – MRC Eye Retrieval Centre, Mysuru, has urged people to pledge their eyes for donation after their demise so that the blind will not be blind for the rest of their lives. The centre is active since 1984, creating awareness among people through TV and radio programmes. LIEB – MRC also does donor eye retrieval when there is a voluntary eye donation. At the eye bank, donor cornea is processed and distributed to corneal surgeons across Karnataka to provide sight to the blind through corneal transplantation.
The Eye Bank is registered with Government of Karnataka and Eye Bank Association of India and is the main provider of donor corneas for corneal transplantations to most of the Eye Surgeons in the State. There are 4.6 million people who are corneal blind and waiting to receive cornea out of which 60 percent are young adults and children. For eye donation, contact Mob: 90357-55046 (Mysuru city) between 8 am and 6 pm; Mob: 97405-56666 (Bengaluru) or Eye Bank Manager Tyagaraj on Mob: 98806-35998.
