No registration fee for e-vehicles

June 20, 2019

New Delhi: To boost the use of electric vehicles, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to exempt battery-operated vehicles from paying registration fees.

The Ministry issued a draft notification in this regard and sought comments from the stakeholders. The exemption will be applicable to all categories of e-vehicle like 2, 3 and 4 wheelers.

“The Ministry has issued a draft notification to amend Rule 81 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules. The amendment proposes to exempt battery-operated vehicles from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or the renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark. This means that electric vehicles would be exempted from such registration charges,” said the Ministry in the statement.
