Meat-sellers oppose two-day a week window during stringent lockdown in Mysuru from May 29 to June 7
Mysore/Mysuru: Even as the District Administration yesterday announced a two-day a week (Monday and Thursday) window for opening of provision stores and other essential commodities and services shops, the meat-sellers of the city and district have severely opposed allowing the permitted shops to open only on Mondays and Thursdays from May 29 till June 7.
Mysuru Broiler Traders Co-ordination Committee President Manju of ‘Ruchi Chickens’ said that the District Administration’s decision was irrational as most people do not consume non-vegetarian food on Mondays and Thursdays.
He asserted that meat-sellers, who are already suffering from loss of business and income due to lockdown, will be all the more affected with the order to shut down on five other days when meat sales will be high compared to Mondays and Thursdays.
He urged the District Administration to reconsider its decision and allow opening of meat shops on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, instead of Mondays and Thursdays, when there will be hardly any business.
Mysuru Mutton Merchants Association President Syed Ahmed said that mutton sellers are already in distress due to loss of business.
Noting that mutton- sellers used to do some business during the lockdown despite time restrictions, he said that opening the meat stalls only on Mondays and Thursdays will be useless as most people do not eat non-veg on these two days. He urged the authorities to reconsider their decision.
Fish Sellers Federation Secretary Chandrababu too said that most people do not eat meat and fish on Mondays and Thursdays. When such is the case, the District Administration’s decision is a blow to non-vegetarians. The fish sellers will face huge losses if the shopping days are not changed, he added.
