Organ donation: Two victims of road accidents save five lives

Apollo BGS Hospitals becomes first hospital in Mysuru region to perform highest number of transplants

Mysore/Mysuru: Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, has performed the highest number of Liver and Kidney Transplants in the region becoming a beacon of quality and hope for patients wait-listed for organ transplants.

In 2021, 35 transplants were successfully performed along with two rare Simultaneous Kidney & Pancreas Transplant (SKPT), said Bharatheesha Reddy, Vice-President & Unit Head, Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru.

“Organ transplantation is one of the most challenging and constantly evolving spheres and a multiple organ transplant is the surgical feat that involves transplantation of more than one organ system simultaneously. The results of organ transplants have improved significantly over the last decade which opens up new frontiers of hope for the transplant programme,” he said.

Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, is a Licenced Organ Transplant Centre (OTC) in the region to perform Kidney, Liver, Pancreas and Small Intestine transplants.

Dr. Rajkumar P. Wadhwa, Head, Institutes of Transplant, Apollo BGS Hospitals, said, “We have performed a total number of 290 organ transplant including liver and kidney at Apollo BGS Hospitals with highest  success rates. The number of transplants has been progressing every year giving hope to patients wait-listed for organ transplants, despite the prevalence of COVID-19 pandemic.”

The organs of P. Nagarajachari (66), retired RPI (Chamarajanagar) and CDI (Channapatna) of Mysuru and Raghu (43) also from Mysuru were harvested and transplanted at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru,  on Feb. 6.

Both the patients were victims of road accidents and were declared brain dead. Both of them were assessed as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994 by panellist doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals.

 The process was executed as per organ donation protocols from Jeeva Sarthakathe. The organs donated are as follows:
