Pillion seat on new 100 cc two-wheelers to be banned

October 23, 2017

Bengaluru: The State Government has decided to ban the pillion seat on 100 cc two-wheelers. The Government has urged the two-wheeler manufacturers not to include the pillion seat on two-wheelers of 100 cc and less. However, the new directive is applicable only to new two-wheelers and not to the old ones already on roads.

Based on a recent High Court order, the Government has written to the officers of all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) directing them not to register any 100 cc two-wheeler with pillion seats.

According to Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, two-wheelers with an engine capacity of 100 cc and less are not allowed to have pillion seats. “However, the two-wheeler manufacturers are not following this rule,” said a RTO official.
