Police stop farmers from laying siege to City Railway Station

March 2, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: Members of Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association were taken into preventive custody while they tried to stage a rail-roko protesting against the alleged anti-farmers policies of the Central Government, here yesterday.

The farmers, who arrived in front of the City Railway Station, were stopped by the Police at the entrance during which the scuffle broke out between the protesters and the Police. When the Police tried to take them into custody, the farmers held a snap protest shouting slogans against the Central Government and also tried to barge into the Railway Station stating they had every right to enter the Railway Station.

Later, they were taken into preventive custody and were lodged at CAR grounds before releasing them later in the evening.

Demanding Minimum Support Price (MSP), the farmers alleged that the Central Government which showed concerns about waiving off the loans sanctioned to the capitalists was not coming forward to safeguard the interest of the farmers.

“The Central Government has taken initiatives to implement M.S. Swaminathan’s Report, Farmers Pension Scheme, Crop Insurance among others including compensation to 750 farmers who had lost their lives in fight for their rights last year,”  they added.

The protesters also mentioned that the farmers when asked for justice were being subjected to golibar which was nothing but disrespect to the farming community. “Farmers from Punjab and Haryana, who are protesting in Delhi, are being termed as anti-nationals which is far from the truth. They are not anti-nationals but people who are fighting for their rights. The protests will continue till the demands are fulfilled by the Central Government,” the protesters said.
