Mysore/Mysuru: Incumbent Mysuru-Kodagu MP Prathap Simha’s re-mark directed at Congress candidate M. Lakshmana, questioning and likening his ‘Vokkaliga caste certificate’ to those issued by KSOU, has drawn criticism from academicians.

Speaking to the media after BJP candidate Yaduveer Wadiyar filed his nomination yesterday, Simha criticised Lakshmana’s candidacy. He highlighted Lakshmana’s habit of making uncivilised comments, foul-mouthing and ridiculing Vokkaligas, questioning whether Lakshmana possesses the straightforwardness and rough demeanour typically associated with the community.

Simha emphasised the importance of fielding capable candidates for election victory, suggesting that the Congress should reconsider its choice of candidate. He cautioned against relying solely on Vokkaliga’s identity to boost electoral prospects, urging the party to consider alternative candidates before the nomination deadline.

Objection to remarks

However, Simha’s remarks about the KSOU certificate drew criticism, particularly from the KSOU Vice-Chancellor and his predecessors, sparking controversy.

Prof. Sharanapa V. Halse, the Vice-Chancellor of KSOU, emphasised the University’s recognition by the UGC and its A+ grade accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). He affirmed that KSOU upholds its reputation and does not issue certificates arbitrarily, as it is committed to its responsibilities. He stated that any comments undermining the University’s reputation are unacceptable.

Prof. K.S. Rangappa, former VC of KSOU and the University of Mysore stressed the importance of MPs speaking responsibly in public and having a thorough understanding of the topics they comment on. He condemned remarks that could tarnish KSOU’s reputation, given its established standing.

Prof. D. Shivalingaiah, another former VC of KSOU, highlighted that the UGC has clarified that certificates from KSOU are on par with those from regular universities. He cited examples of KSOU alumni excelling in competitive exams and obtaining prestigious positions.

He also mentioned that specific courses at KSOU, such as MBA and BEd, are recognized by respective regulatory bodies. Therefore, he stated that any disparaging remarks about KSOU certificates are unwarranted.
