Bengaluru: Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy, currently serving as a Physics faculty at University of Hyderabad, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shivamogga. He is the son of Jnanpith awardee and noted writer late Prof. U.R. Ananthamurthy..

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, in a notification issued on Tuesday, stated that Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy, serving at University of Hyderabad, has been appointed as Kuvempu University VC for a period of four years or till he attains the age of 67 years, whichever is earliest.

The Kuvempu University VC post had been lying vacant after B.P. Veerabhadrappa’s term ended on Aug.1, 2023.

It may be mentioned that Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy, who was an aspirant for the VC’s  post of the over century-old University of Mysore (UoM) in 2022-23, had moved the Court after the Governor appointed Prof. N.K. Lokanath as the VC in Mar. 2023.

Though the Karnataka High Court granted stay on Prof. Lokanath’s appointment in June last year while hearing a petition filed by Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy, the Supreme Court upheld the appointment of Prof. M.K. Lokanath as the UoM Vice-Chancellor last month.
