Rare Coins and Currency Expo

February 9, 2018

Mysuru:  A two-day exhibition showcasing the history of money and culture of the bygone ancient era was held at Mahajana First Grade College in Jayalakshmipuram here recently.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Poornachandra Tejasvi, Joint Director, Regional Office of the Director of Collegiate Education, Mysuru. The display of coins, currencies and stamps was organised by the Department of History and IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) with the co-operation of P.K. Keshava Murthy, Expert Numismatist.

This is the 140th exhibition of his collections and he has been lauded not only for his hobby of numismatics as ‘King of Coins’ but also willing to share his repertoire of knowledge.

Some of the coins exhibited date back to the 5th century BC including the punch marked coins and  those from the times of Greeks and Romans.

Also on display were the coins belonging to the various dynasties of ancient India like the Guptas, Kushans, Satavahanas, Kadamabas etc. The exhibition comprised coins minted during the Mughal age, the great Krishnadevaraya, commemorative coins foreign currencies etc. An attraction was the exhibit of coins with mint — made errors and oddities.  A large number of students had a glimpse of the rare exhibits with immense historical value.
