Rev. Fr. Albuquerque passes away

  • Funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in city on Mar. 4 at 10 am
  • Body to be shifted to Mangaluru and funeral service at St. Francis Xavier’s Church tomorrow evening 

Mysore/Mysuru: Rev. Fr. William Albuquerque (62), a priest of the Diocese of Mysore, passed away in the early hours of today due to cardiac arrest. He had served the Diocese for the last 35 years. 

He leaves behind two brothers and two sisters, one of whom is Sr. Hilda, an Ursuline nun, presently serving in Mumbai.  

The mortal remains of Fr. Albuquerque will be kept for public homage at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary in Bannimantap today from 4 pm.  The funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in city on Mar. 4 at 10 am. Later the body will be shifted to Mangaluru and the funeral service will be held at St. Francis Xavier’s Church, Ferar, his native Parish, at around 5.30 pm. 

Profile: Rev. Fr. William Albuquerque was born on Sept.14, 1958 at Manjakatte, South Canara, to late Pascal Albuquerque and Dulcine Lobo.  After completing his schooling in Mangaluru, he joined St. Mary’s Seminary for priestly studies. Completing his training at St. Peter’s Seminary, Bengaluru, he was ordained priest for the Diocese of Mysore on May 14, 1985 by Most Rev. Dr. Basil D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Mysuru.

Rev. Fr. Albuquerque had served as Assistant Parish Priest at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Vice-Rector at St. Mary’s Seminary, Lecturer in Christianity at St. Philomena’s College, Parish Priest at St. Joseph’s Church, Siddapur, Warden at St. Philomena’s Boy’s Home, Parish Priest at John the Baptist Church, Palahalli, Fathima Church, Kedumullur,  Immaculate Conception Church, Kudlur, Holy Rosary Church, Hattihole. Presently, he was socius at St. Antony’s Church, Gayathripuram.

He was a soft spoken gentle priest, always available to the people wherever he worked. He took an active role in the rehabilitation of the flood victims at Hattihole, during 2018 floods in Kodagu.

Most Rev. Dr. K.A. William, the Bishop of Mysore, Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Antony Vazhapilly, Bishop Emeritus, all the clergy and the religious of the Diocese of Mysore and his close relatives have condoled his death.
