Royal treatment to Sasikala in Central Prison, says DIG

July 13, 2017

Bengaluru: DIG (Prisons) Roopa D. Moudgil has stirred a Hornets’ Nest by accusing her own boss, Director General of Police (Prisons) H. N. Sathyanarayan Rao, of being involved in corruption.

In a damaging report, after visiting Parapanna Agrahara Central Prisons on July 10, to study its functioning, she has found many irregularities and has alleged that V. K. Sasikala, AIADMK chief and close confidante of the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa, has made a payment of Rs. 2 crore to the prison officials.

Roopa, a tough, no-nonsense, sharp shooter cop who has always been in the thick of things in her 17-year-career, without mincing words has asked the DGP to investigate the matter and also pointed out to him that his name keeps cropping up in serious charges.

However, she has not alleged anything directly against Rao, but mentioned that irregularity or malpractice by any of his juniors would also point fingers at him.

Royal treatment for Sasikala

Sasikala is said to be given a royal treatment in the jail because of the alleged change of money in the hands of prison officials. In fact, the treatment is so royal that a special kitchen for her has been set up and to prepare food of her choice, four convict cooks have been appointed, said Roopa in her report.

Special facilities have also been provided in the prison cell where Sasikala sleeps and to look after her convicts have been appointed, Roopa has charged.

Earlier, there were reports emanating about the Parappana Agrahara Central Prisons that influential prisoners have access to booze, non-veg food and even narcotic substances like ganja and hakeem. It is also common to hear about allegations of sexual harassment of women prisoners. Now, it is clear from the report that the VIP prisoners can get anything they want if they bribe the prison officials.
