Safaris at Bandipur, Nagarahole to burn a hole in your pocket

New safari, camera charges to take effect from Sept. 1

Mysuru: Visitors to Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves will have to pay significantly more for safaris from Sept. 1, following a steep hike in entry and camera fees announced by the Forest Department.

The Department has issued orders to the Directors of both Tiger Reserves to implement revised tariff for safari operations at Bandipur’s Melukamanahalli Gate and Nagarahole’s Kakanakote, Veeranahosahalli and Nanachi Gates.

Under the new rates, the fare for a bus safari has been increased from Rs. 600 to Rs. 1,000 per adult, while children will be charged Rs. 500. Jeep safari charges have been revised from Rs. 1,100 to Rs. 1,500 per adult and Rs. 750 per child.

The Department has also revised camera charges. While cameras fitted with lenses below 200 mm will continue to be exempt, those carrying lenses above 200 mm will have to pay Rs. 1,500 plus 18 per cent GST, taking the total fee to Rs. 1,770.

The hike has drawn criticism from wildlife enthusiasts and regular safari-goers, who argue that wildlife safaris play a crucial role in promoting conservation awareness and encouraging public support for protecting forests and wildlife.
