Mysore/Mysuru: ‘Sarvodaya Day,’ marking the 78th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed at a programme organised under the joint aegis of University of Mysore’s (UoM) Gandhian Studies Centre, Vidyavardhaka First Grade College and the NSS unit of UoM, at Gandhi Bhavan in Manasagangothri campus here this morning.

US-based Medical professional Dr. Amar Kumar inaugurated the programme.

Delivering a special lecture on the topic  ‘The Humanity propagated by Gandhiji,’ Dr. Amar Kumar said Sarvodaya Day serves as a day for national reflection on the sacrifices of Mahatma Gandhiji and others for India’s freedom and unity.

“Gandhiji believed that the country is bigger than the Government. He deeply understood the country and it’s history and launched non-violence movement for attaining freedom at a time when world was engaged in wars,” Amar Kumar said adding that Mahatma Gandhi always advocated necessity for being honest, humble and simple.

Vasantha, President of ‘Dhwani’ Mahila Okkuta, Mysuru, was felicitated on the occasion. Earlier, students of University Fine Arts College rendered Gandhi bhajans.

UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof. N.K. Lokanath presided.

UoM Registrar M.K. Savitha, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. N. Nagaraj, Gandhian Studies Centre Director Prof. S. Narendra Kumar, Prof. Aravind and others were present.

Sale of meat is banned in MCC limits today in honour of the day.
