Seminar on generative Artificial Intelligence held at GSSSIETW

July 28, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (AI&ML – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) at GSSS Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women (GSSSIETW), Mysuru, in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysuru, recently organised a seminar on ‘Demystifying AI and Generative AI’ at the college premises.

CII Convener Dr. Navin Patel, who is also Associate Vice-President at Infosys Mysuru, was the guest speaker. He leads the AI Academy, Java Academy and Architecture Academy.

Dr. Navin provided insights into the evolution of technology, particularly focusing on the industrial revolution. He enlightened the students about the advancements in AI-ML, deep learning and generative AI.

Additionally, he discussed generative AI, a form of AI capable of producing various types of content like text, imagery, audio, and synthetic data. He discussed the recent buzz around generative AI, which has led to the development of user-friendly interfaces for creating high-quality text, graphics, and videos in mere seconds.

However, he also emphasised the concerns surrounding deepfakes, which are digitally forged images or videos and the potential harmful cyber security attacks that could mimic an employee’s boss realistically.

The role of generative AI in transformers and large language models (LLMs) was delved into in more detail. Transformers, a type of machine learning, allow for training ever-larger models without the need to label all the data in advance.

This has led to the training of models on billions of pages of text, resulting in more profound and informative answers. Furthermore, transformers introduced the concept of attention, enabling models to track word connections across pages, chapters, and books, rather than just within individual sentences.

LLMs with billions or even trillions of parameters have ushered in a new era, em-                                         powering generative AI models to write engaging text, create photorealistic images, and even develop entertaining sitcoms, he said.

Dr. Navin highlighted job roles that AI & ML students can aim for in industries, such as Prompt Engineering, Chatbot developers, and Chat GPT-based roles. Additionally, he emphasised the ethical usage of modern AI & ML tools for academic requirements.

GSSSIETW Principal Dr. M. Shivakumar stressed the significance of students acquiring knowledge in AI & ML, which fosters a stimulating environment for their professional growth. He advised the students to adapt to the rapidly changing technologies and their applications.
