Silver Jubilee Clock Tower stops ticking!

July 8, 2026

The 99-year-old Doddagadiyara has been stuck at 11.35 for past week

Mysuru: The 75-foot-tall Silver Jubilee Clock Tower, popularly known as Doddagadiyara, which will complete 99 years this year, has stopped ticking once again.

The clock tower was built opposite the Rangacharlu Memorial Town Hall to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. It was inaugurated on August 8, 1927.

The tower features four circular clock faces with Kannada numerals, reflecting the pride of the Kannada language and heritage. It was installed on Prabhavanama Samvatsara, Shravana Masa, Shukla Paksha Somavara (Monday), August 8, 1927. Though the tower originally stood at 72 feet, it was later raised to its present height.

In its early years, the clock’s resonant chimes could reportedly be heard up to five kilometres away, serving as a familiar timekeeper for the city. However, the chiming mechanism has remained silent for over three decades. Now, even the clock has stopped functioning. Maintained by Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), the clock has been stuck at 11.35 for the past week. Traders and residents in the area said no effort has yet been made to repair it.

With the landmark set to enter its 100th year next year, locals have urged the authorities to restore the historic clock to working condition.
