‘Star Punch’ speaks volumes about the game of politics

March 15, 2020

Sir,

The Star Punch by Cartoonist Satish  Acharya (SOM dated Mar.12) speaks volumes about the game of politics in this country. Leaders discarded by one party gets red carpet welcome by the other. The century-old Congress party, battered by two successive Parliament election losses, appears to have not learnt any lessons resulting in loyal and dedicated party workers quitting in disgust.

The Congress party is in deep pit struggling to extricate itself! Inner party democracy has been hijacked by the self-seeking, short-sighted parochial ‘leaders’ in the name of ‘High Command.’ The party has been mortgaged to one family which has lost its sheen and is unable to provide effective leadership.

To arrest further decline, Senior Congress leaders need to come out of their shells, speak the truth, muster courage and elect a popular youngster to head the party sans present leadership. This process should be effected at every level — Gram Panchayat to State-level. Entrust such leaders to build and strengthen the party from grassroot levels. Sycophants need to be kept out!

This exercise may take some time, yet, revival of the party is important and possible. Failing which Congress may not be able to withstand the onslaught of mights like Modi and Amit Shah.
