STAR THIS WEEK – Talented athlete: D. Meghana

Our city athlete D. Meghana has been performing consistently in the State and National level Athletic Meets and has also brought laurels to our country in the International Meets. A product of the DYES, Mysuru, Meghana recently representing the Mysore University in the 77th All India Inter University Athletic Championships (2016-17) conduced by the Anna University at Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore, won laurels by bagging the silver medal in shot-put with a throw of 13.73m. Meghana will be honoured by the Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, for her feat with a cash prize of Rs.15,000 and a blazer. She is our ‘Star This Week.’

Meghana, a 1st BA student of Maharani’s Arts College, Mysuru, is coached by SAK athletic and National coach Vasanth Kumar at Mysuru. She is the daughter of Balakrishna and Praveena.

By winning silver medal with a throw of 13.73m at in the All India Inter-University Meet at Coimbatore, Meghana became the first woman athlete from Mysore University to win a shot-put medal in the All India level.

Kanchnar Choudhary of University of Rajasthan won the first place with a throw of 14.27m. Ruby of Barkathullah University, Bhopal, won the third place with a  throw of 13.33m.

Taking part in the Junior National Athletic Championships at Coimbatore, Meghana  won the gold in shot-put representing Karnataka with a throw of 13.93m and created a new meet record.

The Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, has been promoting her by giving her the required encouragement to forge ahead in her career. Recently Meghana was chosen along with the medal winners in this year’s All India Inter-University Championships for the cash award. Her coach T.S. Ravi and Manager N. Ramesh will also be honoured by the Mysore University with cash prizes.

Meghana has represented India in the World Youth Championships at Ukraine and secured the 16th place in the shot-put event. She represented India in the Youth Asian Championships in China and secured the fourth place in the shot-put event.

Megana won the gold in the shot-put event in the Asian School Track & Field event at Malaysia. She also secured the first place in the shot-put event in the South Asian Federation Games. She also represented India in the World School Games held at Brazil and secured the sixth place.

Meghana has the required talent in her and has all the potential to make it to the next level. She needs encouragement from the Government and also quality and professional training needs to be given so that she can do well in the international level.
