Mysore/Mysuru: While residents of the city are an annoyed lot as they have to bear stray dog nuisance, especially with continuous barking and often obstructing vehicular movement during peak hours, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has claimed that it spends Rs. 3,40,000 per month to sterilise over 300 to 400 dogs.
Along with stray dogs, pigs too roam all over and there is no mechanism to control the menace. Owners just let out their pigs in the open and this contributes to the spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
The MCC Council meeting held yesterday elaborately discussed the issue where Corporators alleged that it is a clear case of lethargy where the authorities are moving slowly in sterilising dogs. Despite tall claims of sterilisation, the dog population has doubled and tripled over the years. Sterilisation drives should be taken up at regular intervals, they demanded.
Responding to this, MCC Health Officer Dr. D.G. Nagaraj said that the dog sterilisation process is being carried out with the support of NGOs and every month over 300 to 400 dogs are being neutered and Rs. 850 is being paid to sterilise one dog, he said. He added that the strays caught by the MCC personnel are also handed over to the NGOs for neutering and releasing them in their respective areas. Intervening, Corporators questioned that if 400 dogs are sterilised every month and the MCC spending Rs. 3,40,000 per month, then why the menace has not reduced and has only increased.
Corporator K.V. Sridhar said that an investigation must be launched on how the sterilisation money is being spent and how effectively the MCC is able to control the stray dog menace.
“MCC teams catch stray dogs using the Corporation vehicles and these dogs are handed over to the NGOs. But why Rs. 850 is paid for a job that is done by the Corporation staff,” he questioned.
Former Mayor Ayub Khan demanded that a committee be constituted to probe this issue and check for misappropriation of funds.
MCC Commissioner G. Lakshmikantha Reddy said that special drives will be carried out in the next one month to control the stray dog menace.
I seriously doubt the sterilization programme and the claim that “Rs. 3,40,000 is being spent per month to sterilise over 300 to 400 dogs”. Either the money is getting siphoned off or the concerned people are not doing their job. The situation on the ground tells a different picture. All over Mysore stray dogs have increased manifold. The corporators should visit some localities in Mysore to get a first hand experience of the stray dog menace.
This is just Hogwash, Take K.C layout for example, The editor and owner of SOM lives there but is oblivious to the fact that the area and surrounding JC Nagar has become a haven for packs of semi-wild dogs which chase down motorists and walkers alike.
Add to this the fact that many young and old people throng the KC layout park and one can imagine the menace, MCC is lying and the local corporator for KC layout is absent, and is incommunicado yet we have not seen any serious op-ed’s or articles about it.
Guess the editor just needs to get off his 4th estate and roam the streets of his neighborhood to understand how this street dog menace is becoming a nightmare for residents of Mysore.
And all those animal rights groups are welcome to adopt the street dogs if they are so against culling.
Couldn’t agree more. It’s an open lie by MCC. Either the money is getting siphoned off or the concerned people are not doing their job. The situation on the ground tells a different picture. All over Mysore stray dogs have increased manifold. The corporators should visit some localities in Mysore to get a first hand experience of the stray dog menace. And yes, the animal lovers who are very concerned about the stray dogs should take them to their homes rather than let them suffer on the streets and feed on the garbage.
These menace is also going on road to naidu nagar from rajendra nagar the stray dogs chase the motorist some times the motorists lose balance, this is going on fro. Years MCC is liying that they spend Rs 340000.
ANYONE CAN VISIT GOKULAM AND CHECK THE ROADS AROUND KRISHA TEMPLE. THERE WILL BE BUNCH OF 12 TO 15 STREET DOGS.
ITS A SCARY NIGHTS IF I WANT GO OUT FOR A WALK IN GOKULAM. DONT KNOW WHEN ALL THIS DOG GOING TO HUNT AND KILL THE KIDS DURING THE WALK. MULTIPLE TIMES DOGS CHASED ME TRIED TO BITE ME. ONCE IT CHASED ME WHEN I WAS IN 2 WHEELER ALONG WITH MY MOTHER. SHE GOT SCARED AND FELL DOWN DUE TO THE DOG CHASE. IT WAS FEW BAD NIGHTS WHERE I TOOK HER TO HOSPITAL FOR FIRST AID.
Surrounding J P Nagar area like A Block or N H palaya where there is lot of main roads & cross roads which has lot of open sites this the home for them at night they all come near Cross roads where they chase the bikers or sometimes children. Previously also complained but the area corporator does not bother the corporator lady never responds to phone calls and never meets people.
This expenditure for so called neutering of dogs is an excuse for pocketing easy money, every month. Packs of dogs and pigs roam this city with impunity and their population is growing. Its a blatant lie by the corporation that they are arresting the increase of the stray dog and pig population.
This so called Royal city has been the heaven for stray dogs for decades. What is new?
I remember in 1950s, massive numbers of stray dogs were wandering in the city streets, and I remember one of my friends died bitten by a stray dog and catching rabies, who the KR Hospital was unable to treat.
These dogs were particularly active in Yadavagiri , a new extension then. The Municipal Council then failed to eradicate the menace. All the Council was interested was collecting tax, and hence did nothing.
At one time, the residents joined together contributed money to get dog catchers , but that lasted only for a short time, as stray dogs returned soon.
It was like the Pied Piper of Hamelin Story with dogs instead of rats.
Interestingly such news makes it before elections time. The municipalities don’t do their jobs well. And packs form around garbage thrown by humans. Humans learn to keep their surroundings clean of garbage, dogs automatically are less as there is nothing to eat, they move away. But then humans are not logical and will always find someone lesser than them to blame for their own errors. And the voiceless creatures like animals take the fall. Population increases when food is available and not streamlined. And don’t blame municipalities always ..take the initiative and work with them to bring down numbers. Learn the rules, form committees and check if the local wards are doing the operations well and not relocating. For long Pune suffered the same. And due to building activities in open areas suddenly one sees large numbers who would otherwise be in the fields. As a citizen be active but not necessarily cruel. Operate n watch the numbers steady in 2 years.
I live in one of the residential sectors and have been observing how growing human colonisation have made the stray dogs unwanted and threatened in their native locations. While similar threats to wildlife from forest encroachment would have got a lot of press and attention, urban encroachment on stray animals habitat hardly draws any government of community action. In this context, there is a need for.creating awareness and acceptance of public responsibility for the health and welfare of stray animals.
Planet earth is not just for humans. It should be shared by each and every tiny creatures of the planet. Dont forget that Street are the homes of the stray animals. So we humans are encroaching their place, not they.
This is clearly a case of misuse of funds by the concerned authorities. The so called dog menace can be controlled with neutering and sterilising. And rather than being cruel. Try befriending the dogs and you’ll find out the difference. The dog lovers are welcome to adopt yes. But not all can adopt and feeding them is the most they can do which is a commendable job. So stop making snide comments on animal lovers and activist and start questioning the authorities and try finding a friendly solution.
Stray dogs problem can not be solved over night. It takes time. And as per some expert the results will only be visible until 70% of the total population of the dogs is sterilized. So at first place counting of stray dogs ward wise is very important. Per day 10 to 15 dogs can be sterilized easily if the NGO who has been given the contract has a good team, so if they say they are sterilizing 350 dogs per month, they might not be wrong. But yes cctv camera to observe their activity and verification of the number of dogs they are sterilizing is important as happens in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Also Dog rule 2001 should be read properly. Rs 850/- per dog is nominal as it is a complete surgery but the quality of work should be checked like equipments etc. Care should also be taken about mortality of dogs during surgery after all they are living creature feel pain just like we humans do. Post operative care is also very important. Municipal corporations perform this activity by hiring NGO but the same work can be done almost free of cost if government veterinary hospital with experts in the field of surgery are already available in the city.
Charges of Sterilisation of one Dog is 2,500 and blood test which is necessary is 1000 … So total is Rs. 3,500 . …. Why are they paying so less to NGO ….. There are 8 million strays in India … It will take 10 years to complete sterilisation task … If done properly … Humans are the real menace
Posters will be serious, if they or one of their relatives are bitten by a stray dog, which almost always caries rabies. The result will be ‘touch and go’ for the victim with painful injections etc..
These dogs are breeding like Indians!
Dogs are humans best friends. Dogs and humans can live peacefully if the humans have awareness about the animals. They are more sensible . They understand the cruelty done by humans.. Same way feed the dogs to make them understand our respect, love. They can’t live without humans support. We can’t relocate dogs since they are territorial animals. Leave them to live where ever they are and provide them food, water and little care to get free security, loads of love back from dogs. Regular Neutering is the only way to reduce the numbers of dogs not poisoning or leaving them for starving…. Dogs behavior is depending upon the society’s behavior. If they are aggressive then the people over there need to get counseled.
Actually the street dogs can be rounded up and sent to areas where they are considered a culinary delight – even to China, Korea.
The neutering projects are a scam by vaccine manufacturers.
Even one case of Rabies is unacceptable, and can be avoided.
Instead we have victiof dog bite in their thousands getting Anti Rabies Vaccine everyday.
