With reference to State Government’s decision to shelve the straightening of the Hunsur Road and our MP’s contradiction of this decision (SOM dated Feb.24), my views are as follows:

Any high school student would tell you that if we have to join two points which are vertically about 50 meters apart and laterally 250 meters away, a slope and a smooth S-bend curve are inevitable. This is what has happened on the road between Kalamandira and Valmiki Road junctions. And such a road is prone to accidents. No matter how many trees you cut or how many additional lanes you build, the road CANNOT be straightened. The only solution to the problem is to caution the road-users.

My suggestion is to provide a compulsory red light for 10 seconds at the Jaladarshini Guest House for the West-bound traffic and a CCTV camera there. The camera must be monitored at the Valmiki Road junction and the culprits must be caught red-handed and vehicles impounded. The vehicles could be claimed only after paying a hefty fine. Meanwhile, I understand that a few trees have already been cut. No need to cut the trees or widen the road. Let us save the trees and at the same time save the tax-payers’ money.
