Tigress, elephant found dead

March 26, 2019

Mysuru / Madikeri:  The carcass of a tigress and of an elephant have been found at Nagarahole and Gonikoppal respectively.

In the first incident, the carcass of the tigress, aged about nine years, was found at Kunthur Beat in Nagarahole.

The Forest Department officials, who rushed to the spot, where the carcass of the tigress was found, inspected it and have suspected that the tigress may have died of injuries after a fight with another feline.

The Forest officials found that the bone in its neck was broken and its skull cracked and died of severe bleeding.

Field Director of Nagarahole National Park K.M. Narayanaswamy has clarified that the death of the tigress was not related to poaching.

The carcass was burnt after post-mortem was performed by the veterinarians.

Elephant death

In the second incident, an elephant, aged about 13 years, was found dead in a pond inside a coffee plantation at Gonikoppal.

According to Forest staff, labourers at the plantation, who saw the dead tusker, informed them. They then rushed to the spot along with senior officers and got the dead tusker removed from the pond.

Veterinarian Dr. Mujeeb, who conducted the post-mortem, said that the body was filled with pond water and added that the primary cause for its death was due to drowning.

Ruling out the possibility of the elephant being shot dead, he said that metal detectors were used to find out whether the elephant was shot dead but nothing was traced in the metal detector.

ACF Sripathi, RFO Gopal and other Forest staff were present.
