Tonsuring revenue row: Court rules in favour of Nanjangud temple

June 9, 2021

Nanjangud: Putting an end to a 25-year-old legal battle, a T. Narasipur Court has ruled that Nanjangud’s Srikanteshwaraswamy temple has full rights over the revenue earned from tonsuring (Mudi Seve) service charges.

Nayana Kshatriya Samaja, which is engaged in head tonsuring  of devotees who take a vow for Mudi Seve at Nanjangud temple’s Mudikatte, used to keep all the revenues earned out of the service. This had resulted in revenue loss of lakhs of rupees every month for the temple, which forced the temple authorities  to bring Mudi Seve under the temple’s control nearly 25 years ago.

But questioning the decision of temple authorities, Nayana Kshatriya Samaja  had moved the T. Narasipur Civil Court seeking full rights over the revenues earned through Mudi Seve. After prolonged hearings and arguments and counter-arguments from both the sides, the T. Narasipur Civil Court on June 3 dismissed Nayana Samaja’s petition and ruled that Srikanteshwaraswamy temple has full rights over the revenue earned through tonsure service.

However, in some relief to the petitioner (Nayana Kshatriya Samaja), the Court said that members of the Samaja can continue with their Mudi Seve service.
