Traffic at Millennium Circle: Some suggestions

September 29, 2021

Sir,

This has reference to the letter ‘Install Traffic Signal Light at busy Millennium Circle’ by Dr. H.S. Sadathalikhan (Star of Mysore dated Aug .5). At first let me remark that the citizens of Mysuru especially those who use vehicles like cars, autorickshaws, small commercial vehicles and two-wheelers do not follow traffic rules and the Traffic Department does not strictly implement traffic laws.

Having said that let me also provide you with my experience abroad (UAE, SA and Kuwait). The road medians are extended much beyond the pedestrian crossing. The one in the photo provided shows the median passes through the pedestrian crossing. Which in my opinion is okay but should have extended at least the length of a car-plus half.

The reason is drivers do not care for pedestrians and they think they own the road and the pedestrian has no right to cross the road. They will not wait and if the median (divider) stops before the pedestrian crossing the pedestrians are at greater risk.

It would be better if the Traffic Department puts up a speed- breaker as wide as the pedestrian crossing and zebra stripes painted; the height of the speed- breaker must be as high as the median. Vehicles will be forced to slow down and will provide a safer crossing of people.

I could have suggested crossing signals but with no maintenance it will be a waste of tax- payer’s money and then vehicle drivers in any case will not stop at a red light. Here we do not follow any rule of law !
