Unnikrishnan to perform for Raaga Vaibhava tomorrow

On Sunday, the 29th of June, Raaga Vaibhava  brings a vocal recital by noted vocalist Vidwan Unnikrishnan. He will be accompanied on the violin by Dr. Nishanth Chandran, on the mridanga by Vid. Tumkur B. Ravishankar and on the ghata by Vid. G.S. Ramanujam. The concert will be held at Mysore Vasudevacharya Bhavana, JLB Road, at 6 pm.

Vid. P. Unnikrishnan:  Among playback singers he is a Karnatak musician and among Karnatak musicians he is a playback singer. That is the uniqueness of Parakkal Unnikrishnan, one of the most versatile and accomplished musicians of South India. What makes Unnikrishnan unique is his rare ability to perform in Karnatak music, light music, fusion music and film music with felicity and finesse. The National Award-winning playback singer hailing from Parakkal has given a new dimension to South Indian playback singing imparting to it a rare flavour of Karnatak music.

Unnikrishnan started his music training when he was 12 years old. He began his formal training in music under V.L. Sheshadri. His musical genius soared to another plain when he came under the guidance of Sangeeta Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan and later by noted violinist Savitri Satyamurthy, Kolkata Krishnamurthy, P.S. Narayana Swamy and Janakiraman.

A versatile musician, Unnikrishnan has been performing in varied realms of music for the past 33 years. He has performed over 2,500 concerts across the world and has recorded several film songs in all South Indian languages.

Dr Nishanth Chandran: A concert violinist, Nishanth is one of the senior disciples of Sangeeta Kalanidhi A. Kanyakumari and Padma Bhushan P.S. Narayana Swamy. He has accompanied almost all the top musicians of today. In 2009, he was a part of Pt. Ravishankar’s music 3 ensemble at Los Angeles.

Dr. Nishanth is an A grade artiste of AIR and a recipient of numerous awards. He obtained Ph.D in Computer Science and is now a leading researcher with Microsoft Research in Bengaluru.

Vid. Tumkur B. Ravishankar: Son of T.V. Bhadrachar, Ravishankar is an accomplished mridanga artiste and has travelled widely accompanying top musicians in India and abroad.

Vid. G.S. Ramanujam: He is one of the leading and sought-after percussionists of Karnataka. Ramanujam hails from a family of musicians and is trained in both mridanga and ghata.                                  He has won many prestigious awards, the latest being Ganakala Bhushana by Karnataka Gana Kala Parishat.
