Mysuru: ADGP (KSRP) Bhaskar Rao released ‘Veerappan: Dantachorana Bennatti,’ the Kannada version of the English book ‘Veerappan: Chasing the Brigand’ at a programme organised at Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Bhavan in JSS Hospital premises here yesterday.
The English book is written by retired IPS Officer K. Vijay Kumar, who headed the Tamil Nadu STF to catch Veerappan, the forest brigand. He is currently serving as Advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking after releasing the book, Bhaskar Rao said that the book throws light on the role of the lower cadre of KSRP in nabbing forest brigand Veerappan, who had eluded the Police for years.
Pointing out that the book explains the situations and the challenges faced in apprehending Veerappan, he said that KSRP has 54,000 personnel who were always ready to serve the people.
Former DG&IGP Dr. D.V. Guruprasad, who has translated the book into Kannada, said that Veerappan posed a challenge to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu Police and BSF for nearly two decades. However, the STF and KSRP succeeded in ending Veerappan’s menace after persistent efforts, in a joint operation 15 years ago, he said.
The wives of Policemen, who died in Veerappan operations —Nagaveni (wife of late Elangovan), Yamuna (wife of Prem Kumar), Jayamma (wife of Siddaraju), Lakshmi (wife of Govinda), Mangalamma (wife of Rajappa), Damayanti (wife of Kalappa), Rathi (wife of Poovaiah), Saroja (wife of Prabhakar) and Dakshayani (wife of Swamy) — were honoured on the occasion.
