Kerala CM to present Award on July 1

Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran journalist and Columnist TJS George has been selected for the Swadeshabhimani-Kesari Media Award-2017, instituted by the Kerala Government.

“Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will present the prestigious award to the nonagenarian at a function to be held here on July 1,” an official source said on Monday.

The Award, which carries a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, citation and a plaque, is the State Government’s top honour for journalists.

A Committee comprising Dr. Sebastian Paul as its Chairman, Parvati Devi and N.P. Rajendran as Members selected TJS George for the Award.

Profile: Hailing from Thumpamon, a village in Kollam,  Kerala, TJS George was born to Thayil Thomas Jacob, a Magistrate and Chachiamma Jacob. 

After graduating from Madras Christian College in Chennai with an Honours degree in English Literature, the 91-year-old began his career in The Free Press Journal in 1950. He has worked in several publications like International Press Institute, Far Eastern Economic Review, Searchlight and was the Founding-Editor of Asiaweek, Hong Kong. George  is now Editorial Advisor to The New Indian Express, for which he writes a Sunday column, Point of View and the same is reproduced in Star of Mysore every Tuesday. 

TJS George is a writer and biographer, who received Padma Bhushan Award in 2011 in the field of Literature and Education.  He has achieved distinction internationally as a professional author, serious political columnist and biographer with a series of major books.
